This episode is about how to get your parents, or a frail spouse, to give up driving

This is a sticky subject for many families and such conversations often erupt in anger.  Trust between you and your parents can wind up strained and your own frustrations and doubts pushed to the limits.

Some families resort to lies, big and little ones, to get their parents to stop driving.  However, once they discern that you’re lying, or trying to, that bond of trust between you all may never recover. As a consequence, your caregiving days will grow more difficult.

If they’ve agreed to give up driving, and you find you need to dispose of that car. Finding someone to “take it off your hands” may not be easy, especially if it’s seen lots of wear. If it turns out it’s not worth much, consider donating it to a local vocational school where students can practice repairs.  Or donate it to a charitable organization like Kars4Kids, Veterans Car Donation, Make A Wish, or Habitat for Humanity - Car Donation.  If the car still has some value, contact We Buy Any Car. This organization will buy used vehicles for anything from $100 to $100,000!  If the registered owner of the car has already passed, you can try asking the family’s estate attorney to help transfer ownership. However, this may be through probate if you’re not a beneficiary.

Finally, if you’re just starting down this road (pun intended) a little empathy will serve you well in moving the conversation in a positive direction.

Listen in for more details on how to get things done.
